Nicknamed “Gateway to the Rockies”, Aurora is the 3rd largest city in terms of an estimated population of 314,326 residents in the state of Colorado in United States. Aurora’s history dates back to the 1800s. The city was founded in 1891 and name Fletcher by its founder, Donald Fletcher. The name was later changed to Aurora in 1907. In 1921 it was selected as the site for the Fitzsimons Army Hospital. This hospital was specifically build to treat the wounded and those affected by mustard gas and tuberculosis during the First World War. Today the life science city at Fitzsimons is home to the University of Colorado Hospital and Health Sciences Center, the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute and the Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora.
The military presence in Aurora improved because of the Buckley Field that was built in 1942 by the Army Air Corps. This along with the Lowry Field brought in more employment and money as the population grew in the city.
It is spread across 154.31 square miles and has over 100 Municipal parks, 7 Municipal Golf Courses and 7 Public Libraries. The city’s population makes it the 58th largest city in the United States. The population comprises of 70% White, 15% Black, 5% Asian and 10% Other race, while the Hispanics and Latinos make up 27% of the total population.
Education is given great importance here in Aurora. The more than 100 years old Aurora Public Schools is the city’s most distinct school district. The Cherry Creek School District that serves Aurora along with three other communities is one of the best performing school districts in the state of Colorado. Other prominent institutions include the Bennett Public Schools, Brighton Public Schools, University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, Pickens Technical College, Anthem College, Columbia College, University of Phoenix and the Regis University to name a few that cater to the students community of Aurora.
The industry and commerce has a bigger role to play in the development of Aurora. As the 3rd largest city in the state of Colorado, it is a booming economy and a business leader in major industries that include biotechnology, aerospace and high technology industries.
